As retention and recruitment are of particular interest to us here at Profiles4Care the latest figures from Skills for Care estimates that the staff turnover rate of directly employed staff working in the adult social care sector was 30.8% in 2018/19. This equates to approximately 440,000 people leaving their jobs over the course of the year.
Nearly one third of the workforce left their jobs over the year, which had a massive impact on service delivery, planning, morale and costs. Frustratingly a large part of this can be avoided using values based recruitment.
Most of these leavers don’t leave the sector. Around 66% of jobs were recruited from other roles within the sector. Turnover rates (local authority and independent sectors only) have increased steadily, by a total of 9.1 percentage points, between 2012/13 and 2018/19.
So most of the industry is simply hiring the same people who were happy to leave their previous employer. It’s time to end this downwards cycle and start recruiting for values and retaining the staff you spent so much effort, time and money to recruit.
